FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 inks agreement with Hifz AlNaema to minimize waste during the tournament The organizing committee of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 announced its cooperation with "Hifz Al Naema" center to recover and redistribute surplus food items, clothing and other goods during the World Cup tournament. This cooperation aims at minimizing waste generated by the tournament and at redistributing surplus production to workers and other beneficiaries. It is expected that thousands of meals will be recovered from surplus supply across 12 stadiums and fan zones and will be processed and redistributed to those in need. Hifz Al Naema, the first food bank and food recovery program in Qatar, has been working with the local community since 2008 to collect, process and redistribute meals recovered from weddings, hotels and restaurants. Over the years, Hifz Al Naema expanded its activities to include other waste-bound goods such as electronics and furniture. Jose Retana, Sustainability Director for FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ LLC said, “The Food Waste Minimisation programme depends on local civilian and social organizations like Hifz Alnaema with the network and resources to not only ensure the safe redistribution of food resources, but also to suggest innovative sustainability solutions for future tournaments and similar global events.” Ali Ayed Al-Qahtani, Executive Director of Hifz Al Naema, said that Hifz Al Naema is keen on supporting, through its established track record in food sustainability, the various activities of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, held for the first time in the Middle East and in the Arab world. Al-Qahtani reiterated that the national entities tasked with planning and supporting the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 have accomplished achievements that predict an unprecedented global event, and an exceptional World Cup tournament. He added : “ The tournament is not limited to football competitions, but is also accompanied by a global economic, humanitarian, social and environmental movement. With our participation as a Qatari civil society organization, we seek to transform the Qatar World Cup into tournament characterized by shared responsibility among all and for this event to pave the way for new standards in upcoming international competitions and events.”
